The Wendover Society Presidents’ Prize
The Presidents’ Prize was created by The Wendover Society using funds from a bequest in the will of it's former President Sir Thomas Barlow RN and additional funding from the current President Bryan Smith CBE. The Prize is to be awarded every two years by the Society for significant contributions to the town’s built or natural environment.
The first award of the prize was made in October 2006. This was to Wendover Parish Council in honour of its restoration work to Hampden Pond. The restoration, environmental planting and improvement of Hampden Pond, which has been very much the brain child and project of Ted Wilkinson, was considered to be a most worthy and appropriate first recipient of the Prize. Runners up were the two new cottages in South Street designed and built by Joyce and Co. Builders, which demonstrated considerable attention to sympathetic detail given their sensitive location.
The award was presented to Councillor Ted Wilkinson at a reception in the Memorial Hall. He received on behalf of the Parish Councilthe elegant hand engraved glass trophy which the Society had commissioned from local engraver Susie Kennett-Brown. He also accepted a cheque from the Society’s President for £500 to fund further plantings of trees and shrubs which it was hoped would further enhance the Pond’s frontage onto the Heron path.
The next award will be made in October 2008.
The Society would be interested in receiving nominations that members might like to make for consideration as worthy recipients of the prize.
