Harvest Supper

We are very fortunate this year to be hosting our Harvest Supper at Ellesborough Golf Club, a place usually only open to members, on Friday 16th October at 18.30 for a 19.00 start. This is an earlier start than usual to take advantage of the lovely views. Places are limited, so if you are interested in coming, we recommend you book your tickets soon.

After a delicious two course meal with tea/coffee and mints, we have the renowned historian and broadcaster, Dr Helen Fry as our speaker. Dr Fry is author of over 25 books on intelligence and the social history of World War II and regularly appears on television and radio as an expert in espionage. She will be talking about what went on in our local area and at Latimer House, which was used for espionage during the Second World War, in a talk titled 'The Walls have Ears'.

Tickets for the Harvest Supper cost £32 per person for members (£35 for non-members).
Please make your choices from the menu below on the booking form, stating any allergies (all main courses can be made gluten-free).

Main course - all served with baby potatoes and seasonal vegetables

  • Roast Chicken Supreme with a warm pesto dressing
  • Oven baked Salmon fillet with Bearnaise Sauce
  • Pan Roasted pork loin with Cider Jus
  • Vegetarian Wellington

Dessert

  • Biscoff cheesecake, chantilly cream
  • Apple tart, caramel ripple ice cream
  • Chocolate brownie, gluten-free, with ice cream

Wine, beer and soft drinks will be on sale at the bar, where payment can be by cash or card.

If you would like to arrive earlier to admire the far reaching views the bar will be open from 18.00 and there is no restriction on time of departure. If you wish, you are able to leave your car in the car park overnight and order a taxi.

Please let us know by Sunday 4 October if you wish to attend and what your menu choices (two courses) are at the time of booking. Please make your choices on the booking form, stating any allergies. If there is anybody that you would like to sit with please also advise us, tables will be for eight, but can be changed if requested.

Places may be booked and payment made on line here though if you are a member and particularly if you have a Direct Debit with the Society, we suggest you book through the link in the personalised email you will have been sent as the form is largely filled in for you and payment is simpler. If you want to book for both members and non-members, please do not combine these in a single booking, rather please make separate bookings for each. If you have any problems booking online, please contact Marion Clayton (622862) or Andrew Burnett (625005) or simply drop a cheque with your contact details and a note of your requirements in to Marion Clayton at 11 Pound Street.

We very much hope that you will be able to join us and look forward to seeing you at 18.30 on 16th October.

Speaker Evening

War Memorials throughout the UK testify that few communities escaped the carnage of the First World War.  On one particular occasion, in July 1916, British and Australian troops made an attack towards the village of Fromelles in Northern France.  Soldiers from Buckinghamshire, including young men from Wendover and The Lee, took part in that attack which failed and many were killed.  This talk by Mike Senior is the story of those local young men who grew up together, enlisted together, trained together, went to France together, died together and are now commemorated together.  It is a story of courage and sadness and it is one that could be told in hundreds of other villages across Britain.

This will be on Friday 13th November at 7:30pm in St Anne's Hall. The doors will open at 7:00.
